The Downsides Of Owning A Franchise

Franchise opportunities can be found throughout the world nowadays. In fact, the world is essentially made up entirely out of franchises. The fact that only one company probably already has thousands of franchises located in the United States and all over the world tells us that a huge number of franchises already populate the globe, situated around 8 million. The clear advantage of owning a franchise of a company is that it very much resembles owning part of the company itself. The franchise fees that you have to pay are rather small and don't take much of a toll on your all-around company income. Owning a franchise is, like many other things, a two-sided coin. One of the downsides is that you will not own your own company, even though you may own your store. Many people start a business with a desire to create an enterprise all by themselves. The only thing you have while owning a franchise is the right to use that company's name and products in your outlets. In fact, the only thing you are doing is working for that company in another location and providing them with a percentage of the winnings. In doing so you are funding the franchisor without them lifting a finger. Another clear downside of owning a franchise is that the contract you have agreed to may have you, sooner or later, cornered. For example, your store may not be as successful at start and you might find yourself unwillingly breaching contract. The fact that usually franchise contracts are made for a period of 15-20 years doesn't help. Furthermore, the help that a franchisee receives from the franchisor may not be used as efficiently as was intended, resulting in you paying your start-up fees to the company for help and training programs you didn't need or use. All in all, owning a franchise brings both benefits and drawback, coupled with a hefty set of responsibilities. Make sure you are up to the task before embarking on the journey.
